Following the Legacy of Kamaraj, MGR, Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa
🕒 2-minute read | Political Observation
Tamil Nadu’s political history has produced leaders who became much more than Chief Ministers. K. Kamaraj, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa each left a distinct imprint on the state.
Today, a new question has emerged:
Could C. Joseph Vijay eventually join that extraordinary list?
The question is particularly significant after the dramatic 2026 Assembly election. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won 108 of Tamil Nadu’s 234 constituencies, becoming the single-largest party, according to the Election Commission of India. Vijay subsequently became Chief Minister. (Election Commission of India)
But winning power and becoming a legendary leader are two very different achievements.
What Made the Earlier Leaders Legends?
Kamaraj is remembered particularly for his simplicity, political organisation, educational expansion and development-oriented administration.
MGR transformed enormous popular affection into a political movement and built an enduring welfare-oriented connection with ordinary people.
Karunanidhi combined political organisation, administration, ideology, oratory and an extraordinary ability to survive changing political circumstances across decades.
Jayalalithaa established herself as a commanding administrator and political leader, overcoming enormous challenges to build an independent mass following.
They differed greatly from one another.
But they shared something important:
Their political identities eventually became larger than elections themselves.
Vijay Has Something Rare
Vijay entered politics with an advantage few newcomers possess—a huge pre-existing emotional connection with people, especially younger generations.
The 2026 result demonstrated that this popularity could actually be converted into electoral power. TVK’s 108 seats also broke the decades-long pattern in which Tamil Nadu’s government was dominated by the DMK or AIADMK. (Election Commission of India)
That itself gives Vijay an unusual place in contemporary Tamil Nadu politics.
But history will judge what happens after the victory, not merely the victory itself.
The Real Test Begins Now
If Vijay wants to become a leader remembered alongside Tamil Nadu’s political giants, popularity alone will not be enough.
He will need to demonstrate that his government can produce measurable improvements in education, employment, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, industrial development, women’s safety, social justice, environmental protection and quality of public services.
More importantly, governance must reach the citizen who has no political connection, money, influence or social-media visibility.
That may become the defining test of his leadership.
From Actor → Politician → Statesman
Vijay has already completed two difficult transformations.
Cinema star → Political challenger → Chief Minister.
The next transformation is much harder:
Chief Minister → Statesman.
A statesman must sometimes make decisions that are necessary rather than popular. He must build capable institutions instead of allowing everything to depend upon one personality.
He must also create a strong second line of leadership, encourage competent public servants, tolerate constructive criticism and make government transparent enough for citizens to measure its performance.
Most importantly, he must convert hope into outcomes.
Five Years Could Define the Answer
Tamil Nadu does not need another personality cult. It needs the next generation of governance.
Imagine a Tamil Nadu where citizens do not have to struggle to reach government; government reaches them. Where technology identifies problems early. Where grievances are tracked until resolution. Where development is measured not simply through announcements and expenditure, but through improvements in people’s lives.
If Vijay can move governance meaningfully in that direction, his political journey could become far more significant than his electoral victory.
Conclusion: Legends Are Not Declared. They Are Remembered.
Kamaraj did not become Kamaraj merely because he occupied Fort St. George.
Neither did MGR, Karunanidhi or Jayalalithaa become enduring political figures simply because they won elections.
Time, governance, struggle, decisions and people’s lived experiences created their legacies.
Vijay now has something millions of aspiring politicians never receive:
an opportunity to write such a chapter.
Whether C. Joseph Vijay becomes Tamil Nadu’s next legendary leader cannot be answered today.
The people have given him the opportunity.
His governance will provide the answer.
The question for 2031 may therefore be simple:
Did Vijay merely become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu—or did Tamil Nadu become better because Vijay became its Chief Minister?
That difference will determine his legacy.
Editorial Note
This discussion should not overlook Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and M.K. Stalin, both of whom have already served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and demonstrated their leadership through the responsibilities of the state’s highest elected office. Their political journeys, administrative records, resilience and continuing influence place them firmly in the larger race to earn recognition as statesmen of their generation. Ultimately, such a legacy cannot be decided by a single election or term—it is shaped over time by governance, public trust, lasting reforms and the impact a leader leaves on Tamil Nadu and its people.
